A more rapid route to the end product with Murata’s SCL3400 high-performance sensor

The latest generation of MEMS sensors cuts complexity in a multitude of applications. The new sensors deliver more precise data from a single IC via serial peripheral interfaces (SPIs). While the data evaluation method used to obtain the desired parameters doesn’t change, the result is available sooner thanks to the sensors’ quality. The evaluation time is shortened, and the object speed can be increased accordingly for mobile applications. Processor requires less power, which is important – especially for battery-operated applications. The reduced energy consumption directly affects the energy source’s size and weight, ultimately permitting longer operation or greater range.

A comparison with the new SCL3400 inclinometer

Murata recently added two high-performance products to its range of MEMS sensors. The SCL3300 has been the solution of choice to date in the SCL series’ inclinometers segment. An improved sensor (the SCL3400, which will be available from June 2022) was released recently.

A general evaluation kit (MEMS EVAL Board 2021) is ideal for examining the new sensor’s properties. The SCL3400 is available on an adapter board (SCL3400 D01 PCB) so users can do exactly that.

Angst+Pfister is joining forces with Nordic Inertial to provide the open Move_IT! (AP EVAL AGPCK40) development board to allow users to compare the two sensors. The kit consists of hardware with the SCL3300 and SCL3400 sensors, plus the new 6-DoF (3x gyro, 3x acc.) SCHA63T K03 series sensor. The 32-bit Cortex M7 processor integrated on the board processes the sensor data, and GPS, distance measurement or vehicle speed data can be transferred using RS-485, USB or CAN bus interfaces.

The NI software development kit (SDK) from Nordic Inertial (comprising the application, the protocol library and hardware abstraction) is available for evaluation. The elements from the library can be used for prototyping purposes and licensed for production. Various patented Kalman filters for static and dynamic applications are available for this purpose. The individual sensors’ data can be addressed and read out using customized software. The kit is designed as an open system, so both sensor solutions and software can be transferred to the customer’s target system.
